Finding a Qualified Steel Building Erector

When purchasing a steel building, one of the most important parts of the project will be finding an experienced erector to erect the building. An experienced steel building erector will take charge and help make sure that the entire project is on track. Having an inexperienced erector can cause serious problems in both the erection of the building and the finished project. Most problems with steel buildings are a result of the building not being erected properly.
A qualified erector has usually erected hundreds of steel buildings. Through the years, they have run into most of the challenges that can come about during the erection process. An inexperienced erector can run into a problem that could potentially extend the project days, weeks, or months longer.

Not all steel building systems are erected in the same manner. A qualified erector will likely have experience with a variety of steel building systems. Using a qualified erector will help ensure that your steel building system is erected correctly and that the building is weather tight and structurally sound.

It is not worth using an inexperienced erector just to save on erection costs. An experienced erector erector will most likely be able to provide you with advice that can save you money on other aspects of your project. An inexperienced erector may save you a few dollars up front, but may not erect the building properly, which may cost much more money down the road.

  • Do Your Homework
It is always a good idea to do your homework on any potential erector. Even if the steel building supplier recommends a particular erector for the project, it would be in your best interest to qualify the erector yourself. After all, you are spending your hard earned money on this project. You do not have any recourse with the supplier if the building is not properly erected. You will likely be using this building for many years, it is worth spending the time to be sure that the erector is qualified to do the work.
  • Check References
The erector may tell you that they have erected hundreds of these buildings. Do not just take their word for it. Ask for some references. If the erector can not provide you with some references, you may want to find one that can. After receiving some references, stop by and take a look at the buildings. Talk to the owners. They will usually be honest about their experience with the erector.
  • Check Certification
Some of the more complex building or roofing systems may require that the erector be certified. In some cases, using an erector that does not have the proper certification can void the warranty on the product. Talk to the supplier to find out if any certifications are necessary for their particular products.
  • Check Licenses
Some states require that a contractor or erector be licensed in that particular state. Be sure that the erector has the necessary licence to perform the erection in your area. You should check with your local building department to find out about any requirements when you are checking on your building codes.
  • Supplier Referrals
The large steel building suppliers have sold hundreds of these buildings over the years. These companies often have relationships with erectors throughout the country. Since they do a high volume of buildings, they may be able to refer you to erectors that have experience erecting their building systems. Even if you find an erector through a referral, it would be wise to do your homework and qualify the erector yourself.

Finding an experienced erector may be the most important part of your steel building project. It should not take too much time to qualify your erector. This is an important step in ensuring the success of your project and that your new building is erected properly.
