Purchasing Steel Buildings

Steel buildings have become more popular than ever in the construction industry. Pre-engineered steel buildings are used for anything from garages to manufacturing facilities. Using a steel building for your project can help you save a substantial amount of money over using traditional construction methods.

  • Finding a Supplier
So you have decided to use a steel building for your project and are searching for a good deal. There are literally hundreds of companies on the Internet that are trying to sell steel buildings. Many of these companies are small operations being run by people that used to work for larger suppliers.

The problem with some of these one-person operations is that many of them do not have any experience with actual projects. Many of them were on the sales side of the industry and do not know the actual details involved in a construction project. They are purchasing the building from one of the larger suppliers. Since they only sell one or two buildings every month or so, they are not able to purchase the buildings at a low enough cost to compete with the larger suppliers.

We would recommend working with an experienced supplier. An experienced steel building supplier can help you with many of the details involved in your project. To find out if a company is experienced and reliable, ask for references of one or two customers they have worked with in the past. A reputable supplier should be able to provide you with at least a couple of good references.
  • All About the Money
If you have been shopping around for a steel building, you have probably realized that some companies are all about the money. They can be aggressive and will push you to put a deposit on a building as quickly as possible. They don't care about you or your project, they just want to get you locked into a contract.

Although it is necessary to put a deposit down on a building before the design phase can take place, be sure you know what you want and exactly what you are purchasing before sending your money. All steel building companies will require some type of deposit, but you do not want to put any money down until you have read over the agreement and know what you are purchasing.
  • Steel Building Components
Steel building components are additional items such as skylights, doors, windows, vents, and other accessories that are not considered part of the steel building system. These components must be purchased separately from the steel building system. A supplier might include some components as part of a package, but be careful. These additional components may be low quality. It is recommended that you purchase components separately so that you know how much they cost individually. A steel building system will usually come standard with the following:

    • The complete framing system made up of the end and interior frames, columns, rafters, and flange bracing.
    • Horizontal load bracing, purlins, girts, eave members, end wall columns, base angles, and any other structural framing that is necessary to support the roof and wall coverings of the steel building system.
    • Exterior metal roof and wall covering of the steel building system including trim, fasteners, sealants and closures.
    • A complete hardware package that includes all nuts and bolts for the steel to steel connections of the structural framing of the steel building system.
The steel building system will generally includes everything necessary for a completely enclosed, weather-tight steel structure. Again, the steel building system does not usually include any doors, windows, skylights, vents, or any other components. These additional components are considered accessories and may be purchased through a dealer, supplier, or manufacturer directly.
