Receipt of the Steel Building System

At the time of delivery of your building, you should immediately begin verifying material quantities received against material quantities billed. This verification process is often handled by the erector. Any shortages of materials must be noted on the shipping documents and acknowledged by the carrier's agent. If the verification process is neglected, neither the carrier or supplier may be held responsible for shortages that are discovered later. All materials and quantities should have been verified by the supplier and carrier at the time the building is loaded on the truck at the plant.

Damaged Building Materials
As part of the verification process, all building materials should be checked for damage. The supplier and carrier can not be held responsible for materials that are damaged during the unloading process.
If materials are found to be damaged, the damage must be noted on the shipping documents and acknowledged by the carrier's agent. If the carrier is the supplier, the supplier should be notified immediately. If the carrier is a common carrier, the carrier should be notified. The steel building supplier can not be held responsible for problems during erection as a result of damaged materials if the materials were not detected by a visual inspection during the unloading of the building.

The inspection and verification of materials is very important. Be sure to verify and inspect all materials as they are unloaded. Any damage to materials or components should be visible. If you do not inspect the materials, you may have to pay for materials that were damaged in the shipping process.

On a rare occasion, a building component may be found to be defective during the erection process. If the component is defective and not damaged, the supplier will be responsible for replacing the component. If you find any of the components or materials to be defective during the erection process, you will want to notify the supplier immediately.

Most steel building erectors are experienced with the verification and inspection process. If possible, it is a good idea to have the erector receive the materials at the site. The erector will know what to look for and know how to handle anyproblems that may arise.
